Our Story – From Farm Boy to That Butchery Guy

Michael Hyman’s story begins in Upington, where he grew up as a farm boy with a deep love and respect for animals — a value that has remained constant throughout his life. Those early years on the farm shaped his work ethic, his understanding of animals, and his appreciation for honest, hands-on work. It was here that the foundation for a lifelong career in butchery was laid.
At just 21 years old, Michael was ready to take on the challenges of city life. With no shortcuts and no privileges, he started at the very bottom — working as a cleaner in a SPAR butchery. Through determination, long hours, and a willingness to learn every part of the trade, he worked his way up, eventually becoming a Butchery Manager. Every cut, every process, and every lesson added to his growing expertise.
In 2005, Michael met his wife Charlene, and together they began building not only a life, but a future rooted in strong family values. His career took them to Kirkwood, where he continued to grow in leadership and experience within the butchery industry. After getting married and starting their family, they made the decision to move closer to relatives and support. This led them to Kleinmond, where family and community played a bigger role in their daily lives.
Michael once again joined the local SPAR, but his dream of owning his own butchery never faded. When the opportunity arose, he took it with both hands. In 2012, he opened Gouga Slaguis in Botrivier, trading successfully for seven years until 2019. This chapter marked the true beginning of his entrepreneurial journey — built on trust, quality meat, and strong relationships within the community.
At the end of 2019, another opportunity presented itself, this time back in Kleinmond. Together with a business partner, Michael purchased the local Werner’s Vleismark and rebranded it as Vleiland Slaghuis. The business continued to grow, and in 2022, a new partnership was formed. With this change came a new name — That Butchery Guy.
The name quickly became more than just a brand; it became an identity. Customers learned to trust it for quality cuts, honest pricing, and friendly, personal service. It represents a butcher who understands family meals, braais, budgets, and the importance of knowing where your meat comes from.
Today, Michael is a proud family man and father to three children — Mikayla, Leamé, and MJ. His love for family mirrors his love for community. Whether serving customers behind the counter, preparing quality cuts, or greeting familiar faces, Michael believes a butchery should feel personal — a place where people are known, valued, and served with integrity.
